of late i have been reading and watching news about the so called doomsday prediction..... that the world will end sooner than expected and that too due to an experiment being conducted by some scientists at CERN laboratory in Geneva.
to be very frank i dont understand a bit about this shit called Doomsday..... highly unscientific and pure Irony of Fate....... the experiment being touted as the doomsday experiment is ironically trying to unravel the mystery behind the cosmic creation !!!!!!!!!!
so what is it all about????
lets analyse it piece by piece and try to find out what has prompted all this doomsday prediction and the real truth behind all this.....
To start with let me first tell you why do we have this stuff at all...... what is the need of this experiment???
the following are the reasons::::
1. Since time immemorial man has tried to understand the real nature of Nature around us. we have , in our quest, delved in to the ocean of unknown. first we came to know that the things around us is made up of molecules which are further made up of atoms. then we came to know that these atoms are further made up of PROTONS, NEUTRONS and ELECTRONS. later we came to know that these so called fundamental particles are also made up of smaller particles called QUARKS which are always bound togethar due to a process known as CONFINEMENTand they are glued togethar by another interesting stuff known as GLUON. but the real problem is not only to detect these particles but also to study them. THIS EXPERIMENT AIMS AT DETECTING AND STUDYING SUCH EXOTIC PARTICLES AND THEIR PROPERTIES.
2. Another baffling thing about particles is that they all possess a unique property known as MASS. but nobody exactly knowshow particles aquire mass. quantum field theory offers an explanation in the form of HIGGS BOSON. it is supposed to be a quantum particle of the background HIGGS field and every particle has mass due to this. ANOTHER AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT IS TO DETECT THE HIGGS BOSON POPULARLY KNOWN AS THE GOD PARTICLE.
3. theories like the quantum field theory and the string theories etc predict the presence of more than the 4 dimensions ( 3 - space and 1- time) known to man. ANOTHER AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT IS TO DETECT WHETHER SUCH DIMENSIONS EXIST OR NOT.
4. as and as observational astronomy is advancing a new baffling thing is coming to the fore front...... THE MISSING MASS...... the observable universe has only 5% of the mass it is supposed to have...... so the question arises ....WHERE IS THE REMAINING 95% OF THE MASS?...... scientists have a strange answer....... the mass is distributed in two forms..... DARK ENERGY WHICH ACCOUNTS FOR 70% OF THE MASS and DARK MATTER WHICH ACCOUNTS FOR THE REST 25%. but neither of them have been directly detected ever. it is assumed that they are made of some exotic forms of matter which are SUPER SYMMETRIC COUNTERPARTS OF SOME KNOWN TYPES OF MATTER. THIS EXPERIMENT ALSO AIMS AT FINDING OUT SUCH SUPERSYMMETRIC PARTICLES.
these are but only some of the aims of this gigantic experiment. now comes two more questions....
WHY DO WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE ABOVE AT ALL?
WHAT DO WE ACTUALLY GAIN FROM THIS EXPERIMENT?
WHAT ABOUT THE "DOOMSDAY PREDICTION"?
let me answer them one by one.....
whatever we have today around us is an outcome of man's quest for knowledge. man has always tried to know more about the nature and in the process gained a lot of insight into his own existence. same this time too.
what we tend to gain??? A LOT !!! really..... READ ON WHY???
Internet was the outcome of a similar effort in the past and Ironically at the same place......
but this time the situation is vastly different...... the amount of data generated will be so high and so fast that the internet servers will all fail to handle such a situation...... hence a far more advanced version of data movement storage and distribution facility has been invented.... known as THE GRID PROCESSING....... this new process will revolutionise the world of computation..... complex problems like PROTEIN FOLDING PROBLEM IN GENETICS .....WEATHER FORECASTING........ WEAPON TESTING.....etc which require immnse supercomputing ability will gain a lot....... we will be able to know more about how a certain disease works and how to create a drug against it........... these are but just a fraction of such things that we will gain......
now the main question......... DOOMSDAY PREDICTION........
well all this doomsday prediction revolves around the blackhole story.......
so let me first tell you how a black hole is actually created.........
we all know stars burn due to the fusion reaction of hydrogen in them...... when they run out of hydrogen fuel in a few billion years they go through a vicious cycle and in the end they come across two possible ends........ WHITE DWARF ( OUR SUN WILL BECOME THIS) or BLACK HOLE.
the gravitational pull of the black hole is so strong that not even light can escape it. but to have a black hole you need huge amount of matter in a very small space.........
take for example........ our earth will become a black hole if you can compress our earth in to a small marble ( kanchaa). .....
now why should we not be afraid of the black hole in our experiment... this is due to the fact that far more energetic bombardments take place in our upper atmosphere round the clock due to the bombardment of cosmic particles...... but I SUPPOSE WE ARE STILL ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!1
also in this experiment the possibility of a blackhole formation is as good as that of a MONKEY READING ALL THE BOOKS KEPT IN THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS..........
